MEDICA is an annual global medical technology showcase event. It was held with the COMPAMED event at Messe Dusseldorf from November 14-17, 2022, and hosted 81,000 participants and more than 5000 exhibitors. Covering an extensive array of medical technologies used in outpatient and clinical care settings, MEDICA and COMPAMED highlighted innovations from 70 countries, including components, products, and services.
COMPAMED featured about 700 companies that supply the medical technology industry with high-performance digital solutions, components, and devices such as sensors, batteries, thin film coatings, microfluidics, mobile and wearable diagnostic devices, implants, and laboratory equipment.
In terms of the global marketplace, countries like Germany, the UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the USA, Korea, and Japan had very large pavilions with the presence of small and medium-sized enterprises, multinationals, academic institutions and ecosystem partners, such as accelerators, hubs, and industry associations. This was beneficial in exploring collaborative relationships and understanding regulatory frameworks to penetrate global markets.
Canadian participants appreciated the opportunity of exhibiting within a Canadian pavilion because of the exposure to a large number of participants, the breadth of medical technologies, the participation of global companies and leading institutions, and the representation of players in the medtech supply chain.
Of particular note on this trip was a conversation with a Japanese start-up wanting to work with Canadian innovators to commercialize applications to their technology through an application-specific exclusive license arrangement.
