Deep Tech Canada Smart Materials Trade Mission to Japan 2026

In January 2026, we travelled to Tokyo, Japan to participate in nano tech Japan 2026, one of the world’s leading nanotechnology and advanced materials exhibitions. The mission focused on smart materials, quantum innovation, and applied nanotechnologies, positioning Canadian organizations at the forefront of collaboration with Japanese industry leaders.
Led in partnership with the University of Calgary - Faculty of Science, Calgary Economic Development, and the Trade Commissioner Service, the delegation brought together 9 innovative companies, research institutions, and government representatives committed to expanding Canada–Japan partnerships.

The mission officially launched at the Embassy of Canada to Japan with a Canada–Japan joint seminar and networking reception. The event brought together researchers, corporate leaders, investors, and government stakeholders to explore collaboration opportunities in advanced materials and nanoscience.
We extend our appreciation to Yamagata University, GSI Creos Corp, and Nanotechnology Business Creation Initiative for their support in delivering a high-impact seminar.

These visits provided firsthand insight into Japan’s advanced materials ecosystem and created opportunities for direct engagement with research and corporate leadership teams.
We wrapped up the day with a delicious izakaya group dinner hosted by Calgary Economic Development and the Government of Alberta.
Over three dynamic days at the exhibition, the Canadian Pavilion served as a vibrant hub for meetings, tech demonstrations, and business development conversations. With total visitor attendance reaching 45,202 over the course of the event, the exhibition offered exceptional exposure to global industry leaders and prospective partners.
Kristin Baetz, Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary, acting as head of our delegation, participated in the Kagami Biraki ceremony, an inspiring and symbolic moment that celebrates collaboration and new beginnings.

Nano Tech Japan 2026 demonstrated the strength of Canada’s innovation ecosystem and the growing momentum behind Canada–Japan collaboration in nanotechnology and smart materials. The mission concluded with strengthened partnerships, new business opportunities, and a solid foundation for continued engagement in the Japanese market.
