Marie D’Iorio is President of Deep Tech Canada, a network she founded under the name of NanoCanada in 2015 with a vision to connect the nanotechnology community across the country. Her leadership has supported partnerships and collaborations between academia, industry, and government to translate scientific breakthroughs to the marketplace.
Dr. D’Iorio is also a Senior Strategy Advisor at the University of Ottawa in the Office of the Vice President, Research. Before joining the University of Ottawa, she led the National Institute for Nanotechnology and the Institute for Microstructural Sciences at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).
Marie has a Master’s and Doctorate in Solid State Physics from the University of Toronto. She established Canada’s first very low-temperature, high-magnetic-field laboratory to study quantum semiconductor devices, and later led one of Canada’s first research programs on organic light-emitting devices.
Along the way, Marie has witnessed the inspiring depths of research and innovation excellence in Canada. And, she’s seen the opportunities that remain untapped. It’s what drives her to continue helping others access the resources, people, and support that bring their innovations to life.
Marie’s personal passions include spending time with her granddaughter, knitting, and advocacy work for equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Janice Warkentin is the Executive Director of Deep Tech Canada and also serves as Corporate Board Secretary. Since helping launch the organization in 2015, she has built and developed a global network of industry, government, and academic connections that are advancing Canadian innovation. She also serves on several committees, and is Secretary of the International Standards Organization Terminology and Nomenclature joint working group.
Janice started her career working for non-profit organizations. Later, she moved to the federal government and spent 13 years supporting the Canadian House of Commons and the National Research Council. Her background includes communications, stakeholder engagement and consultation, public relations, and business development. She holds an advanced citation in global leadership from the University of Alberta.
Connection is at the core of Janice’s approach. At Deep Tech Canada, she supports members here at home and while travelling in Asia, Europe, and North America to lead delegations that showcase Canadian excellence in emerging technologies. Seeing the transformative effects of the relationships she helps build, and the technological breakthroughs that result, fuels her passion for this work.
Outside of work, Janice is an avid traveller, budding gardener, and serves as corporate secretary and chair of community and school councils.
Isabelle joined Deep Tech Canada in December 2020. She started her career working for the RCMP Behavioral Sciences Branch. She later moved to the National Research Council, where she met her future Deep Tech Canada family and spent the next 8 years working for various government organizations. At Deep Tech Canada, she plays a pivotal role in overseeing and orchestrating our many programs, projects and events.
Isabelle holds a bachelor’s degree in International Development and Anthropology from the University of New Brunswick. Outside of work she enjoys travelling, hiking, being out in nature and spoiling her two doodles, Sissi and Khaleesi.

Jackie joined Deep Tech Canada as a Project Administrator at the beginning of 2023. She is a seasoned professional who served as a Chief of Staff in the federal government for over 15 years. Jackie has managed the day-to-day operations of multiple projects, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. She is an exceptional communicator and relationship builder with proven ability to drive results and innovative solutions.
Jackie is driven by organization. She approaches all projects with a “how can we make this work” attitude. At Deep Tech Canada, she supports the executive team with their vision and mission of facilitating partnerships and collaborations by creating a network that helps members reach their full potential.
Jackie’s personal passions include travel, yoga, watching her two boys play sports, and all things coffee.
Clayton brings 25 years of creative inspiration in the development of digital, print and multi-platform campaigns for a variety of retail, non-profit, public and corporate clientele.
A graduate of MacEwan University’s Visual Communications, Digital Design & Media program, and an avid abstract painter, Clayton brings an artistic appreciation and understanding to the world of graphic design. During the course of his career, he has worked on a diversity of award-winning marketing and advertising campaigns, and has garnered an impressive roster of industry awards and professional acclaim.
Currently living in Vancouver, he has remained remotely rooted in Edmonton by working closely with many well-known Alberta companies. Over the last 15 years he has managed his own design studio, collaborating with a range of colleagues and advertising agencies throughout the country.
