James Ede

Dr. James Ede is a toxicologist and risk assessor with extensive experience working with new technologies, including biobased and nanoscale materials, as well as characterizing potential exposures and associated health risks across the product life cycle. James has been working with Vireo Advisors since 2015, collaborating with industry and manufacturers of new technologies to address hazards and reduce risk.

James has worked with several companies to evaluate potential exposures to new and emerging materials in occupational, consumer, and environmental scenarios, characterizing potential health or environmental hazards of emerging materials for safety, policy, and decision making. James is versed in current and proposed risk assessment frameworks for nanomaterials and has a detailed working knowledge of international regulatory requirements for new and emerging substances. James has helped several manufacturers navigate regulatory authorizations for chemical, food, food-contact and medical applications in numerous markets including the United States, Canada, European Union, Japan and China.

James also works with industry associations, non-governmental organizations, and governmental agencies to develop and update tools, techniques, and approaches for the risk assessment and risk management of emerging materials. Several projects address the safety, sustainability, and market strategies for emerging and biobased materials, including work with the OECD, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Defense, and Health Canada. James is currently serving as chair of the SRA Advanced Materials and Technologies Specialty Group.
